Thank you Hobby Lobby!

There is a silver lining in this cloud. Justice Alito has handed the left a wonderful opportunity - at least, he has handed the pacifist left something.

Those members of the Peace Church traditions will now be able to opt out of funding any military spending on religious grounds. I have been wanting to do this for some time anyway, but now the Supreme Court has clearly provided Christian peaceniks everywhere with legal cover to do so. And I imagine that the ranks of that group will swell rapidly as it becomes clear that one third of Federal tax will no longer have to be paid. Hallelujah. Perhaps when it becomes clear that most of this funding was unnecessary in any case, Republicans will suggest a tax cut of like measure, allowing peaceful progressives to divert more money to religious-positive causes like caring for the young, the disadvantaged, and the challenged. Bonus all round then!

Now that I think about this for a little longer, I also want to opt out of funding Congress, because I object on religious grounds to the damage done to global weather patterns by the numbers of flights taken by congresspeople in private jets. And to their travel in other jets, and in cars. Of course, this opt out should extend to the travel undertaken by Supreme Court judges. Fund your own immoral travel you sinners! (I will make exceptions for those justices who deliver opinions I and my moral/religious tradition agree with.)

This is of course snark. Right wing religious types have (of course) been protected by the SCOTUS. Left wing religious types…. well, not so much. We would probably still have to go to jail - and in North Carolina, we are.
